Research interests: Morphological typology, grammaticalization theory, the development of the Indo-European verb system, and the documentation and description of minority languages.

Steven read Classics and Modern Languages at University College, Oxford, before moving to Magdalen College, Oxford for an MPhil and DPhil in Linguistics: in his graduate work he looked at various aspects of the development of verb morphology from Latin into the Romance languages. Steven has also undertaken linguistic fieldwork on the morphosyntax of the vulnerable Northern Talyshi language of Azerbaijan (North-West Iranian; Indo-European).
