Pursuing excellence in low carbon cement and concrete technology

The overall vision of the Advanced and Innovative Materials (AIM) Group is to establish a Londonbased International Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon Cement and Concrete Technology.

1 September 2017

The research activity is mainly focused on low-carbon cementitious materials.

These include: alkali-activated cementitious materials (AAM) – for example alkali-activated slag and fly ash – calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA), calcium aluminate cement (CAC), magnesium oxide-based cements (MgO) and Portland cement-based composites. In addition, some unique and tailored research capacity and facilities have been developed which have strengthened our leadership in certain areas of low-carbon cement and concrete. Typical examples include microwavebased curing, Raman spectroscopy-based monitoring, and carbonation-based accelerated curing.

In September 2017 the AIM Group hosted the 37th Annual Cement and Concrete Science Conference at UCL. The Conference was organised jointly by AIM and Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining’s Cementitious Materials Group
