Research summary

Urban mobility transitions and experimentation

My PhD research examines the role of municipal government in Urban Mobility Transitions and Experimentation in Bristol, Singapore and New York. I trace the long-term impact of 'experiments' or pilot projects on the mobility system of these cities over two decades (1996-2016). This work is at the intersection of socio-technical transitions research and urban studies.

As part of the H2020-funded SUMP-PLUS project led by Prof Peter Jones, I am developing novel conceptual frameworks and analytical tools for understanding mobility transitions in 6 European cities, including transition pathways and links between urban systems.

Transport policy and transport equity

Another strand of my work has focused on socio-spatial equity in relation to mobility systems. With colleagues at the UCL Urban Innovation and Policy Lab, I have been developing research and policy engagement on equitable transport provision within London’s night-time economy. My MSc dissertation focused on travel to school and mobilities of suburban families in outer London. I am interested in:

  • Transport policy and planning, integration of social equity and environmental sustainability

  • Everyday mobility and social practices

  • Night-time mobility in cities

Governance of urban sustainability

Building on my background in environmental governance, I am also interested in:

  • Urban climate change governance, particularly the role of city networks

  • Planning of new sustainable urban neighbourhoods (eco-districts)

  • Policies and funding for urban sustainability innovation at national and global levels

Biography

Emilia is a Research Assistant on the European Commission-funded CIVITAS SUMP-PLUS project at the UCL Centre for Transport Studies, and a PhD Candidate at the UCL Urban Innovation and Policy Lab, Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP).

My expertise centres on governance for sustainable and socially just urban mobility systems, at the nexus of infrastructure systems, technological innovation, climate change, and socio-spatial equity. I have professional experience across the UK, Finland and India, in transport planning within local government (UK, Finland), research (UK, India) and international development (India). Prior to starting my PhD at UCL, I worked at Imperial College London, assisting with research and community engagement in three East London boroughs for the EUFP7-funded PASTA (Physical Activity through Sustainable Transport Approaches) project on transport & public health.
