Dr Judith Zhou
Environmental Laboratories Manager/ Departmental Chemical Protection Officer
Dept of Civil, Environ &Geomatic Eng
Faculty of Engineering Science
- Joined UCL
- 8th May 2006
Research summary
Dr Judith Zhou joined
UCL in 2006, as a research fellow on the TSB-funded ProCeSS project (Process
Envelopes for Cement-based Stabilisation/Solidification of hazardous industrial
wastes), and has been Technical Manager of the Environmental Engineering
Laboratory in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering
since 2009, with responsibility for coordination of practical aspects of a
diverse range of multidisciplinary projects.
Dr Judith Zhou's research interests lie in interdisciplinary
studies of chemistry, analytical chemistry, cementitious materials, novel
building materials and their application to environmental issues, such as
industrial waste treatment, nuclear waste immobilisation, reuse/recycling
industrial by-products and wastes; novel cements, concrete durability and
water/waste water treatment. She has more than 15 years of research experience
in cement chemistry, completing a PhD thesis titled “The Hydration of Calcium
Sulfoaluminate Cement” and worked on concrete durability (chemical attack), immobilising
nuclear wastes at the University of Sheffield and the National Nuclear
Laboratory, UK. With background of
analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry and cement chemistry, she has
been working on understanding interaction between industry wastes and cements,
water and waste water treatment, water pollution monitoring and removal.
Being the Environmental Engineering Laboratories technical manager in
charge of analytical services in the department, Dr Zhou has wider knowledge and
experience of various advanced instruments, such as GCMS, HPLC, TOC, IC,
UV/Vis, ICP/MS, Auto Solid-Phase Extraction and Accelerated Solvent Extraction.
She is also familiar with various material characterisation techniques, such as
XRD, SEM, TGA, DSC, and FTIR.
Teaching summary
Dr Judith Zhou teaches Y1, Y2 and Y3 Environmental Engineering
laboratory classes. She leads environmental tasks of Lampeter field trip. She also co-supervises PhD, MSc and Y3 research projects.
