Dr Arthur L Allan and Membres d'Honneur

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Arthur L. Allan, Emeritus Reader in Surveying, at the age of 94. Arthur’s connection to UCL spanned decades, beginning when he first arrived as a student in 1954 and continuing through his tenure as a staff member from 1972 to 1994. From 1976 to 1982, he served as Head of the Department of Photogrammetry and Surveying.

During his many years at UCL, Dr. Allan proved instrumental in shaping our department’s academic programmes. He was a tireless advocate for incorporating new methods in surveying and photogrammetry, initiating fieldwork courses in places like the Isle of Wight and forging links with organisations such as CERN, which opened practical training and career paths for countless students.

Beyond his official roles, Dr. Allan authored multiple textbooks that served as cornerstones for surveying education and remained reference points for professionals in the field. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was named an Honorary Member of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), reflecting both his deep technical expertise and his commitment to international collaboration.

On the Lighter Side Reminiscences by A. L. Allan, former student and staff member and now Emeritus Reader in Surveying

Arthur’s tenure at UCL was captured in his own words in the personal notes excerpted from his “Reminiscences,” where he recounts anecdotes from his student days—ranging from planetabling on Hampstead Heath under the watchful eye of the then-legendary Col Biddle, to memorable field courses and the behind-the-scenes camaraderie among fellow students and staff. His recollections reflect a vibrant, forward-thinking department and highlight Arthur’s sense of humour and genuine affection for UCL.

As we mourn the loss of Dr. Allan, we also celebrate the many ways his career and character enriched our community. His dedication, innovative spirit, and commitment to academic excellence will inspire colleagues and students alike.
