Engineering the net-zero revolution: UCL launches MSc in Sustainable Structural Engineering
18 December 2024
UCL is leading the charge in sustainable engineering education with the launch of its new MSc that prioritises environmental responsibility and resilience and addresses the most pressing challenges of our time.
University College London (UCL) Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering is excited to announce the launch of its new MSc in Sustainable Structural Engineering, a programme designed to equip engineers with the skills and expertise needed to lead the way in sustainable design and construction.
“This programme empowers engineers to take on one of the greatest challenges of our time: creating structures that are not only safe and efficient but also sustainable and resilient. Here, at the intersection of engineering innovation and environmental responsibility, you’ll learn to lead the way in designing for a net-zero future.
Prof. José Torero, Professor and Head of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering
Recognising the urgent need to address climate change and urban sustainability, this pioneering programme places low-carbon resilience at its core. Students will gain the knowledge and tools required to design, construct, and maintain structures that are environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Designed for real-world impact
Through a unique combination of industry-led teaching and design-based learning, the MSc in Sustainable Structural Engineering prepares graduates to tackle significant global challenges. The curriculum is designed to:
- Advance expertise in low-carbon design and construction.
- Foster leadership in interdisciplinary teams to deliver sustainable and resilient structures.
- Address critical issues related to urban infrastructure and environmental responsibility.
“As an alumnus of this department at UCL and a structural engineer, I am very excited to see the development of this course, which prepares students to enter the industry equipped with the skills to guide design teams and clients toward more sustainable choices, driving meaningful change in our built environment.
