University College London Professor and Head of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering Department, Jose Torero, presented at the International Technical Safety Forum 2022 (ITSF 2022) held at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in October 2022.

The ITSF 2022, hosted by CERN, served as a forum for exchanging state-of-the-art ideas, processes, procedures, and technologies in personnel, environmental, and equipment safety from high-energy physics and synchrotron radiation laboratories around the world. The event took place from October 24th to October 28th, and participants were able to attend either in person or online.

A fire workshop was held during the conference on Wednesday, October 26th. The workshop provided an opportunity for speakers to present their ongoing projects related to fire safety in particle accelerator facilities. In addition to the regular fire safety plenary sessions of ITSF, this workshop included an opening presentation by Prof. Jose Torero. Prof. Torero, who has been working in various aspects of fire safety engineering for 30 years, has led world-renowned research as well as complex engineering projects.

In his presentation, Prof. Jose Torero's presentation focused on the role of competence in delivering fire safe complex and unique structures. He emphasized that addressing competency is crucial to ensuring complexity is managed safely and in a fair manner.

Moreover, a member of the CERN staff presented on re-launching the FCC-FIRIA-Fire-Collaboration. The objective of this presentation was to kick-start a collaborative and networking framework, allowing experts working in the fire field to stay connected and updated. The workshop was open to everyone interested in current fire safety projects and those who wanted to join and participate in the network for fire safety engineers working in particle accelerators.
