UCL CHIME Alumus Wins Best Journal Article Prize

25 February 2015

UCL CHIME alumnus Dr Benjamin Irving (PhD Biomedical Engineering and Medical Image Analysis 2012) was announced on February 25th 2015 as joint winner of the 2014 Taylor & Francis Commonwealth Scholar Best Journal Article Prize for his article Computer assisted detection of abnormal airway variation in CT scans related to paediatric tuberculosis, published in the Medical Image Analysis Journal in October 2014.

Dr Paul Taylor, Director of CHIME, who supervised Benjamin's work along with Andrew Todd-Pokropek of the UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing, said "Ben was a fantastic student and this was a great piece of work, showing how the statistical analysis of shape features can be used to identify TB from patients' CT scans. The challenge now is to apply the same approach to solve the problem in 2D, that's a tougher nut to crack but Ben's work gave us the best possible start on that journey."
