Martin Bodian

Publications by Martin Bodian (1910-1963)

Born in Vienna, Martin Bodian qualified in medicine in 1934. He began his paediatric studies at the University Kinderklinik in Vienna. In 1938 he left Austria and settled in London. He moved to Edinburgh and from there to the pathology department of the Postgraduate Medical School, London. After obtaining the diploma in clinical pathology he was appointed temporary pathologist at the Hospital for Sick Children in 1943. In 1946 he was appointed to the permanent staff as morbid anatomist.

In 1949-50 his first major contribution to childhood pathology was made in collaboration with Dr Douglas Stephens, showing that Hirschsprung's disease was due to an absence of ganglion cells in the distal segment of gut. His monograph on fibrocystic disease of the pancreas was published in 1952, which includes a very thorough study of the pathological changes in this disease. He also became interested in neoplastic diseases and with D Lawson he suggested an improved classification of intracranial tumours.

In 1953 he received a grant from the British Empire Cancer Campaign which was renewed annually. A registry of tumours was set up at the Hospital for Sick Children at this time. He also carried out research on the effects of vitamin B12 on tumours.

Martin Bodian was an excellent teacher and took regular classes of postgraduate students. He was also in demand for the special courses held in the Institute of Child Health. He was MRCP (1953), and a member of the Pathological Society of Great Britain & Ireland, the Association of Clinical Pathologists, and the British Paediatric Association.
