Dr Wendy Heywood
I am a GOSH BRC supported Senior Research Fellow in Translational Mass Spectrometry and a Honorary Clinical Biochemist at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Using expertise in proteomics for biomarker discovery and understanding disease mechanisms my group develops novel assay panels for clinical applications such as clinical trials and development of novel therapies. With GOSH BRC support and active collaborations with clinical partners we develop and streamline translation of novel biomarkers.
I have an active research group in Lysosomal Storage Disorders looking at biomarkers for Neuronal Lipofuscinosis (Battens disease), Niemann Pick C disease and the Glycosphingolipidoses disorders (Fabry, Gaucher & Krabbe disease). I also have a specific interest in the toxic mechanisms of lyso-lipids.
Recently my group have been involved in Covid-19 research with developing biomarkers for long covid, understanding the aetiology of PIMS-TS, developing multiplex SARS-CoV2 antigen and antibody assays for variant specific responses and identifying and developing novel biomarkers for early T-cell activation in blood.
