Research summary

My research is focussed on using new combinations of imaging techniques to measure and understand human brain activity across spatial and temporal scales. This work encompasses technical aspects such as ensuring safety and optimising data quality when new combinations of measurements are made. I am also engaged in exploring and using new methods for analysing the data obtained.

My main focus over the last few years has been on combined measurements of electrophysiology via EEG and functional MRI; research pioneered at UCL. EEG is normally measured from the scalp but can also be recorded from within the brain – intracranial EEG - which is sometimes performed as part of assessment for epilepsy surgery. I am currently increasing the use of these combined techniques to study children in general, because the EEG signal has interesting patterns of activity in children and young people.

The main application of these methods is in the study of children with epilepsy who are treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust. Surgery in childhood can dramatically improve the lives of some individuals with epilepsy by cessation of seizures and limiting disability caused by disrupted development.

The aim of presurgical evaluation is to identify those children who will benefit from surgery and to formulate a surgical plan for resection of the epileptogenic area to achieve seizure freedom while preserving eloquent cortex. There is a need to improve presurgical evaluation to identify those children likely to benefit from surgical intervention, and to better tailor their treatment, by providing improved information for both clinicians and families to make these life changing decisions. Modern neuroimaging methods hold promise in this context by non-invasive identification of epileptogenic brain regions and cognitive networks.

Teaching summary

I lecturer on the neuroimaging MSc at the UCL Institute for Neurology. I also supervise MSc projects for students studying on various MSc courses including neuroimaging (UCL Institute for Neurology), Biomedical Engineering & Medical Imaging (Dept. Medical Physics and Bioengineering) and Cognitive Neuroscience (UCL-Birkbeck Psychology departments).

I currently supervise several PhD students based both at the UCL Institute of Child Health and Institute for Neurology.
