Practicing Qualitative Research in Child and Adolescent Health

15 – 19 November 2021. This 5-day course is a new offer for postgraduate students with little or no prior experience in conducting qualitative research. The course will be a mix of lectures and practical sessions and will be run online. This course is open to MSc, iBSc and PhD students at ICH and GOSH only.

The aim of the course is to provide participants with an understanding of the fundamentals of qualitative research and practical skills needed to conduct their own qualitative research projects.

This course is open to MSc, iBSc and PhD students at ICH and GOSH only.

Topics covered

What is qualitative research?

  • Introduction to qualitative research
  • Patient and public involvement and engagement
  • Co-design
  • Child-centred methods in qualitative research

Methods of data collection:

  • Introduction to interviewing
  • Introduction to focus groups
  • Introduction to observation of clinical encounters
  • Introduction to mixed-methods research

Data analysis:

  • Fundamentals of qualitative data analysis
  • An introduction to common approaches to data analysis including thematic analysis, framework analysis, grounded theory, IPA, ethnography, and narrative analysis

The practicalities of qualitative research:

  • How to write-up qualitative research
  • Getting a study up and running
  • Live Q&A with the faculty
Outcome

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Have an understanding of the fundamental aspects of qualitative research
  • Appreciate the different approaches to conducting qualitative research
  • Have insights into different methods of data collection and analysis
  • Understand how to set up and get a qualitative study through NHS ethics and R&D
