Guidelines Relating to the Administration of Higher Degree Research Students

Below, we list the general roles and responsibilities of students and their supervisors, as well as the postgraduate research team (PGRT) who are responsible for higher degree research students.

* Once a student has been accepted, registered and joined ICH they will be included on the ICH student database by the Research Degrees Office. This will mean that the student will be included on ICH systems and be invited to an induction session, notified of all events, courses, monitoring procedures etc. For further details on the application procedure see:

* Following registration, all students and their supervisors will be informed about setting up the student’s e-log which is mandatory. The Co-Departmental Graduate Tutors (DGTs) (Mona Bajaj-Elliott and Gabe Galea) have access to the e-log for all students to monitor compliance (see below). See:

* The internal ICH monitoring of research students is co-ordinated by the Research Degree admin team. Named confidential forms are completed annually by students and supervisors and the students have a meeting to discuss progress and other issues with their allocated postgraduate tutor (Andy Stoker, Mona Bajaj-Elliott, Gabe Galea, Mary Fewtrell, Dagan Jenkins, Frederique Liegeois).

* The upgrade procedure from MPhil to PhD and the review process for MD(Res) and MB PhD is outlined in the link below and should take place for full-time students no later than 18 months after initial registration. The choice of an “external academic” (i.e. external to the project and student's section) and the organisation of the 3 components of the procedure is the responsibility of the primary supervisor. The upgrade proposal form should be completed and submitted to the ICH Research Degrees Officee at least 4 weeks prior to the upgrade taking place. The ICH-UCL Upgrade Panel Report form should be completed and returned to ICH Research Degrees Office for DGT (Mona) to sign off (subject to satisfactory completion of the e-log - see above) and forward to UCL Research Degrees. See:

* Completing research student status (CRS) can be applied for after 3 years for a full-time student and after 5 years for a part-time student (see link below). The primary supervisor should request CRS from UCL registry (researchdegrees@ucl.ac.uk) and copy ich.researchdegrees@ucl.ac.uk See:
