Dr Federica Montanaro
I joined the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre at GOS ICH in 2016 as a senior lecturer, when I moved my research laboratory and my family of five from Ohio, USA to London. It has been a complex move, trying to find a suitable home for 3 boys full of energy, finding good schools (primary, secondary and special needs!), adapting to a very different life style and a long train commute, while setting up the lab and hiring new staff. Both my family and my research into treatments for muscular dystrophies are very important to me. I am at my best when my work and personal life are balanced, and a big part of keeping that balance involves relying on others. At home, I am very fortunate to have a very supportive husband (also a scientist) and three boys who care deeply for each other. At work, I have been lucky to join a supportive group of scientists, clinicians and admin staff who share my vision of enabling people by creating an environment that is conducive to personal and professional growth. Making things work is definitely a team effort and this nomination means to me that I am giving back in a meaningful way to the team that supports me. Thank you.
