This talk will introduce several experimental techniques to study the photochemical dynamics of mass- and isomer-selected anions generated through electrospray ionisation. There will be an emphasis on how combining data sets from several action spectroscopy experiments, including photodetachment, photoelectron, time-resolved photoelectron, photodissociation coupled with ion mobility, and laser excitation coupled with tandem ion mobility, is necessary to gain a holistic understanding of the photochemical dynamics. Selected example anions will include models for the photoactive yellow protein & green fluorescent protein chromophores, and hetero-PAH anions with astrophysical importance. Significantly, we will demonstrate the importance and preponderance for coupling between valence-localized and non-valance states in isolated anions.
