Why did you choose your degree?

I always enjoyed science at school. More specifically, I loved the way Chemistry connected the physical and biological disciplines of the other sciences and seemed to underpin every aspect of the world around me. The opportunity to deepen my understanding of this subject and gain a well-respected degree were my main reasons.

Why did you apply to study at UCL?

Being the first in my family to attend university, I always knew I wanted to aim high. I found the open day to be very welcoming and became determined to apply. UCL is a world-class institution and I knew it would give me a great grounding for a future career. My school teachers urged me apply here and I am extremely grateful for their encouragement.

What is the best thing about your course?

The course is well structured, and I enjoy how each year’s content flows on from the one before. This means you gain a much deeper understanding of the subject as you progress to later years. I find I am not merely learning for the sake of examination but for enjoyment of the subject.

What do you find interesting about your field of study and what inspires you?

UCL is not short of inspirational individuals. I find many of the lecturers and people I interact with to be very inspiring. I’m interested quite broadly in the biological applications of chemistry. I’m inspired by solutions chemists can provide to medical problems and I enjoy lectures and classes which incorporate this field of study.

Do you think studying at UCL Chemistry is a good investment?

Definitely. UCL gives you a great platform to go out into the world and succeed. It equips you with the ability to think freely, to apply yourself, and to interact successfully with others.

What is it like studying in London and how do you think it has benefited your studies?

London is truly a city like no other. Being a fresher I sometimes used to walk around for hours not believing I was here - that I was really living in London! (That does wear off eventually)! London is a vibrant place and thus the university attracts so many incredible people that all motivate you to succeed. Seeing fellow students, from all over the world, strive to reach their potential is a very inspiring community to be part of.

What are your career plans once you’ve completed your current programme of study at UCL?

I’d like to do something that directly benefits others.

Is there anything else you would like to say about your time at UCL Chemistry?

UCL chemistry is a welcoming place to study. I have always felt wholly supported by members of staff and tutors alike. It’s truly a great place to be
