AIChE is an organisation for chemical engineering professionals, with more than 60,000 members from more than 110 countries although primarily from the USA. Fellow is AIChE's highest grade of membership and is achieved only through election by the AIChE Board of Directors. The grade of Fellow is awarded to members in recognition of significant professional accomplishments and contributions in engineering. Selections are based on nominations.

Her nomination states: Professor Eva Sorensen is a recognized global academic leader in (i) research in fluid separations, (ii) chemical engineering education, and (iii) equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). She has published extensively in fluid separation research over three decades, making seminal contributions to dynamic modeling, design and control. She has an extensive track record of contributions to professional societies spanning over 25 years, via the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE), the Norwegian Research Council (NRC), and the AIChE. For over two decades, she has made significant contributions to the engineering community as editor of a leading journal, Chemical Engineering Research and Design, including as Editor-in-Chief (2010-20).

Professor Sorensen said:
“I am deeply honoured to be elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The Institute is a leading engineering organisation, and I am delighted to be a part of their work towards tackling global engineering challenges.”

Professor Sorensen is also a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She was made a Fellow of the European Society for Engineering Education (FSEFI) in 2018 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) in 2024. In 2023, she became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in King Charles III’ birthday honours list.
