C⁴U has been named the National Winner – United Kingdom in the ‘Outstanding Projects’ category at the Mission Innovation 2024 Net-Zero Industries Awards Ceremony held on November 18th at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Established by Mission Innovation, the scheme is a global competition in the field of R&D and innovation in industry decarbonisation of energy-intensive sectors.

Coordinated by Professor Haroun Mahgerefteh and his team, Drs. Elena Catalanotti, Sergey Martynov, and Richard Porter at University College London (UCL), the CU project is supported by €14 million in EU funding. It brings together an interdisciplinary consortium spanning eight European countries, as well as Mission Innovation countries, Canada, China and USA. The project focuses on developing cutting edge CO2 capture technologies, optimal CO2 transport solutions, business models, and policy instruments for the successful decarbonization of the iron and steel industry, as part of CCUS industrial clusters.

C4U Project Coordinator Prof. Haroun Mahgerefteh (UCL Department of Chemical Engineering) expressed his pride in the achievement, stating:
“It is incredibly gratifying to see the hard work and dedication of the CU Consortium recognized through such a prestigious award. Over the past five years, our team has made crucial advancements in developing and testing groundbreaking solutions to mitigate CO2 emissions from the steelmaking industry, which is considered one of the largest anthropogenic emitters in the world. Leading this work has been an absolute honour.”

The project, which will conclude in March 2025, continues to drive decarbonisation in hard-to-abate industries.
