Congratulations to UCL Chemical Engineering graduate Xavier Rosas Advincula, winner of the 2022 Best Research Student Project CENG0038 with his MEng thesis entitled “Sampling and Analysing Phase Transition Data for the Approximation of Nucleation Collective Variables Using Graph Neural Networks”. The project was supervised by Dr Matteo Salvalaglio, head of the Molecular Modelling & Engineering Group. Xavier was also recently awarded the Goldsmith Medal Award, the highest honour in the Faculty of Engineering at UCL. He is now off to PhD studies at the University of Cambridge.

According to Dr Yang Lan, the module lead of MEng research project CENG0038,"the research project is a final year project for our 4th year MEng students and consists of an individual research project selected by the student working under the supervision of a member of the academic staff and is one of their most important assignments."

The award was sponsored for the first time by the UCL spinout company Bramble Energy and an award ceremony took place on their premises. This included an introduction to the company and a comprehensive tour of the facilities by CEO and CTO Dr Tom Mason. At the ceremony, Xavier received a trophy designed by UCL Chemical Engineering Workshop Manufacturing Engineer, Aimilios Davlantis Lo.

Dr Tom Mason, CEO & CTO Bramble Energy said: “It is a pleasure to sponsor this award and be a part of recognising the innovation that UCL and its students consistently deliver. Bramble, as a company would not be where it is today without the continuing support of this institution. It was great to welcome the team and Xavier to our facilities to show the full extent of just how an idea developed within the department can flourish and grow into a company like ours. We congratulate Xavier on his award and look forward to seeing what the future holds.”

Professor of Adaptive and Responsive Nanomaterials and Deputy Head (Enterprise) at UCL Chemical Engineering, Dr Stefan Guldin noted about Bramble Energy sponsoring the award: "We are absolutely delighted that Bramble Energy is supporting this Award. They are on an awe-inspiring journey - from a promising idea developed by Tom Mason and coworkers on the lab benches of our department to a highly credible technology leader. It was fascinating to visit their amazing facilities and feel the buzz of their ever-growing team with meanwhile over 70 employees."

2022 Best Research Student Project CENG0038 winner, Xavier Rosas Advincula quoted: "It is an immense honour to receive this prestigious award. At UCL, I have been continually inspired to think disruptively and tackle real-world problems to make a meaningful impact on the world, an ethos that aligns perfectly with Bramble Energy’s. Together we have the power to enact real and immediate change in this world."

We congratulate Xavier for all his achievements.
