UCL Department of Chemical Engineering

Livia Silveira, MSc Graduate 2016

I can probably say that this was the most challenging, intense and rewarding year of my life. I had a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Brazil, and when I decided that I wanted to move to London to undertake my Masters, UCL was my first choice. The MSc Chemical Process Engineering offers a broad range of modules, from specific chemical engineering topics to environmental, waste water treatment and project management. Differently from my previous education, all courses focused on the application of theoretical knowledge into practical engineering problems, and the one I liked the most was the design of an electric hybrid vehicle with hydrogen fuel cell. There were many challenges throughout the year and UCL was always available to provide all the support I needed to develop my skills and deepen my technical knowledge.

My research project was the highest point of my MSc, in which I had the opportunity to develop a study of enhanced recovery techniques for shale gas reservoirs, as part of a major project in partnership with the European Union to develop shale gas exploitation in the EU. My supervisor gave me a high level of autonomy to define the scope and direction of my work. This project also offered me the chance to use cutting-edge reservoir simulation software employed by the industry.

I truly recommend the UCL MSc in Chemical Process Engineering to anyone who is willing to expand their knowledge, work hard, be prepared for the future and, above all, live an unparalleled exciting experience.
