Green hydrogen production, integrated with renewable energy usage, has the potential to support clean energy transition in the near future. However, an important consideration would be the water requirement for electrolysis to support the long-term commercial-scale production that can be additionally challenging for countries that are drought-prone, or have variable rainfall patterns, conditions that are further likely to intensify due to climate change. This lecture will explore the potential sources of this required water including the accessible freshwater, seawater, and wastewater and if they are sufficient to meet our future demand for green hydrogen, with consideration on how desalination, recycled wastewater and stormwater can reduce our reliance on freshwater supply. The lecture will conclude with a discussion on how green hydrogen can become competitive in the energy market and ready for scale-up in the 2030s.

Our taster lectures will give you a chance to find out about the subjects we teach and research, you'll be able to meet our lecturers and researchers and you can put your questions to the team. We look forward to welcoming you.

About the Speaker

Sudeshna Basu

Lecturer at University College London

Sudeshna Basu profile photo
Sudeshna Basu is a Lecturer (Teaching) in Chemical Engineering and Senior Research Fellow (Earth Sciences). Her research and teaching interests are focused on different types of natural resources (e.g. diamonds, carbonatites, oceanic sediments, water and gas shales) for better understanding of their occurrence and formation, with implications towards their sustainable management. Her research on the study of shales, investigates the circulation of volatiles through these rocks using different geochemical tracers, that can constrain the contamination pathways in these commonly occurring surficial rocks.  She is also interested in aspects of urban science focusing on the environmental effects of climate change on water security and deterioration of building stones.  More about Sudeshna Basu
