My BSc in Chemical Engineering was completed at the Provadis Hochschule in Germany. As I wanted to pursue an MSc degree in the UK, I chose UCL due to its reputation and design project. This project allows young engineers like myself, without previous design experience, to carry out a design project as part of their degree.
During the design project, I was part of a group of seven tasked to design a 100,000 t/a Mono-styrene Production Plant. This allowed me to develop my assertive skills and communication skills, as it is always difficult to operate smoothly in such a large team. A great advantage of the design project involved the possibility of transferring the skills developed from other modules to the design of a process plant. This project also helped me to gain a better understanding of the amount of work required to design an entire plant, which I am now doing full time as part of an engineering team at an industrial site in Germany.
My favourite part of the MSc was the Advanced Process Engineering course and the second part of my design project, where I wrote programs for optimisation, and was able to conduct research on the prediction of jet fire behaviour. UCL is known as London’s Global University, which was reflected in the background and expertise of the lecturers and my fellow students. There were hardly more than five people from the same country, which provided a great opportunity to network with people from all over the world. UCL also offers several networking events, where you can meet other fellow students, potential employers and alumni.
Studying in London has been a truly rewarding experience. The MSc is demanding, but if you are eager to learn and manage your time appropriately with all the things London has to offer, it will be a truly great year. With regards to the afterschool activities, London offers something for everyone. If you are looking for networking events, improve foreign languages, or just want to enjoy a last-minute West End play, there will be something for you somewhere.
