Have you been involved in any piece of work related to closing the BAME Awarding Gap at undergraduate level at UCL?  We want to hear about it!

BAME Awarding Gap conference

The UCL Black, Asian and minority Ethnic (BAME) Awarding Gap Project is hosting a one-day conference for UCL staff and students, and external guests, on the theme of ‘Closing the BAME Awarding Gap at UCL: our journey so far'.

The conference will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, 9 June 2021 and will open with a welcome from President & Provost, Dr Michael Spence.

The Supporting BAME student success conference is part of a three-year project to address the disparities in outcomes and experience of undergraduate Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) and white students at UCL. While UCL students, whether white or BAME, tend to perform well above national benchmarks, this discrepancy, known as an awarding gap, has persisted for the past few years.

The annual conference is a chance to reflect on successes and lessons learned from the project so far. We know UCL students are passionate about this issue and we want your voice to be included in this discussion.

How to take part

If you have played a part in helping to close the Awarding Gap, we want to hear about it!

There are numerous ways you might have been involved in relevant activities. For example:

  • taking part in a module or programme-level project or course on the topic.

You might have been involved in a related Volunteering or Clubs & Socs project, or maybe even started your own project or initiative at UCL to help tackle the Awarding Gap.

Contribute to the conference by creating one of the following about your work:

1.       A blog post (max. 600 words)

2.       A 5 minute video

3.       A self-guided PowerPoint presentation (max. 8 slides)

Your creation will be provided to attendees in advance of the conference, so they can keep a copy of it and view it in their own time.

Payment and prizes

We know some students have suffered financial hardship due to the loss of part-time jobs during the pandemic. The conference committee will award a stipend of £25 for each student whose submission is taken forward to the conference.

The best submissions, voted for by the conference attendees, will also be awarded a prize.

How to submit

Click the link below and fill out the form to submit a blog, video or short Powerpoint presentation. You will need to log in with your UCL details.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm, Wednesday 26 May.

Submit content to the conference

We will contact you about the outcome of your submission by Tuesday 1 June. If your submission is being taken forward, you will be asked to complete any edits to your presentation, blog or video by 4 June.
