Mitochondrial Disorders are a group of rare diseases caused by abnormalities in a part of the cell called the 'mitochondria'.

The mitochondria are responsible for making most of the energy required by cells.

More detailed mitochondrial information is available through the Wellcome Trust Centre at Newcastle University.

Mitochondrial diseases affect the nervous system and skeletal muscle as well as other organs.

Together with colleagues in Newcastle and Oxford, we provide a patient and diagnosis service for referrals in the UK.
