The 2011 conference took place following the success of the first three UK neuromuscular translational research conferences hosted by the MRC Centre and the MDC in London in 2008, Newcastle in 2009 and Oxford in 2010.

The two-day conference showcased the best UK neuromuscular science, and highlighted its translation into patient benefit.

The conference included invited keynote speakers who provided state of the art overviews, as well as platform and poster presentations from submitted abstracts. Prof Thomas Voit, Institute of Myology, Paris delivered the Victor Dubowitz Lecture, and Prof Robert H. Brown, University of Massachusetts Medical School, delivered the Thomas Morgan-Hughes Lecture.

Both days of the two-day conference were designed to engage basic and clinical neuromuscular scientists and neuromuscular clinicians. There was a reception and gala dinner on Tuesday 29th March at BMA House.

Key themes encompass basic science to clinical care and included:

  • Translational research in human mitochondrial diseases
  • Peripheral Neuropathy: bench to bedside
  • New MRI applications in neuromuscular disease
  • Linking animal models to human neuromuscular diseases and treatments
