Foresight and Horizon Scaling Reviews in a range of topics relating to engineering education
Example: Review for the RAEng on UK engineering higher education (report to be published in 2025)
We were commissioned by the UK Royal Academy of Engineering to undertake a review of teaching and learning in UK engineering higher education. This project involved both a national survey and desk-based research to determine the current state-of-the-nation in engineering education, considering student numbers, demographics, finances, innovations in teaching and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Curriculum review and evaluations – including aspects of accreditation or assessment
Experts within the UCL Centre for Engineering Education engage with UK and internal partners to undertake quality reviews, internal teaching audits and to advise on teaching development initiatives. These are generally not made public, and are often linked to developments in accreditation or internal assessment priorities.
Development and initiation of new programmes in collaboration with international partners
Example: Newgiza University: two five-year undergraduate programmes
In 2021, we began a seven-year project to design, develop and deliver two new undergraduate engineering programs for Newgiza University (NGU). These are ‘Architectural Engineering’ and ‘Computers, Communications and Autonomous Systems’, and will form the foundation of NGU's new School of Engineering. We are working with NGU to ensure relevant regulatory requirements and local needs are met.
Bespoke training and mentoring programmes in engineering education
Example: Royal Academy of Engineering, Safety Champions in Engineering Education
With the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering, we provided a 10-week online programme to educators in Malaysia, the Philippines, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda. This was followed by sixth months of mentoring. The main objective was to support local educators in developing curricula that address safety challenges arising with rapid infrastructure expansion, which are faced by engineering graduates in emerging economies.
Capacity building workshops
Example: Engineering Education Masterclasses in South Africa
In collaboration with universities in South Africa and the UK, we offered a series of eight two-day masterclasses to engineering educators. Topics covered ranged from curriculum development and enabling students to connect mathematical theory with engineering practice, to fostering inclusivity in engineering education in South Africa.
