Studentship Opportunities

Summer Studentships offer a stipend for UCL Engineering students to pursue a project developed in collaboration with a staff member over a number of weeks in the summer.

Teaching and Learning Support Summer Studentship

What are Teaching and Learning Summer Studentships?

The Teaching and Learning Summer Studentship has been running since 2012. It was set up to support students and staff working in partnership on projects that improve the learning and wider student experience at UCL Engineering.

Summer Studentships offer a stipend for Undergraduate UCL Engineering students to pursue a project developed in collaboration with an academic over 8 weeks in the summer.

Summer Studentship projects are perfect where staff and students want to work together to address a problem, explore an idea or make a change. We call this a 'student-staff partnership' project. It recognises that both staff and students bring different but equally valuable perspectives, ideas, experiences and expertise to a project.

Who can submit an application for Summer Studentship funding?

Open to all staff (both academic and professional services) and undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, except those in their final year and due to graduate this summer.

Anyone can submit a proposal (staff or students) although we strongly encourage you to develop and submit your application as a team. Applications coming from students will need a statement of support from a member of staff in their department (or related to their project) to confirm that the department supports the project, that it addresses student priorities and that they will work with those students as their staff partner.

Funding available

The studentship will pay London Living Wage for up to 8 weeks (London Living Wage is currently £11.95ph, for a 36.5 hour UCL week, we pay £436.18 per week), typically starting from the beginning of July. Training will be provided appropriate to the requirements of the project. In addition, up to £200 may be requested for materials and consumable items.

The type of project we support

We welcome applications that focus on improving assessment and feedback, including formative and summative assessment techniques, as well as student reviews of assessment across the whole curriculum. We do not support projects that seek research support.

Some previous examples of projects include;

-Creating Effective Assessment Rubrics including the Student Voice

-Review of the BSc Crime Science Programme Curriculum through the UCL Inclusive Curriculum Health Check

-Improving the Experience of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Students when Transitioning Back to In-Person Learning

-Students’ perspective on teamwork as an educational strategy

-Closing the Assessment/Feedback Loop – Optimising the learning process through student partnership

-Establishing a local resource of open medical imaging datasets
