Bringing Global Engineering Ethics Educators Together
23 April 2025
Two CEE members, Senior Research Fellow Dr Diana Martin, and Honorary Professor Shannon Chance, along with Mircea Tobosaru (University Politehnica of Bucharest) organised a successful 2025 SEFI Ethics Spring Symposium at the end of March in Ireland.

On 24-26 March 2025, 35 delegates from across the world communed in a small seaside town in Ireland. The symposium’s main goal was to strengthen the collective capacity to teach ethics to future engineers. A key focus was the Routledge International Handbook of Engineering Ethics Education (RIHEEE)—a major collaborative effort by the SEFI Ethics special interest group.
The symposium featured an extensive program, including keynote presentations, interactive workshops, and insightful panel discussions. The panels were designed to collect and consider a range of perspectives from those who did not author a chapter in the volume, yet have rich insights to contribute based on their teaching and research experience. Panellists were asked to read their respective sections and consider: What patterns can they see? What’s covered well? Are there gaps or missing perspectives? How can we translate the content for appeal and usefulness (e.g. for teachers, university administrators/managers)? What should our community do next to apply or expand on the theme?
In addition, former SIG Ethics chair Roland Tormey offered a literary walking tour of Dun Laoghaire .
