Centre hosts international visitors to exhibit how UCL teaches engineering

30 March 2023

A group representing four South African universities, Delft University of Technology and Aalborg University, visited the Centre for Engineering Education to understand more about our innovative delivery of Undergraduate engineering education and engineering education research.

Inernational engineering educators spent a week hosted by UCL as part of a week-long visit to London and Southampton based institutions. Four colleagues from Aaolborg University and two from Delft University of Technology joined a group of eight from the Innovative Engineering Curriculum Project, a collaboration of multiple universities in South Africa.

The group met with UCL staff, including the Pro-Vice Provost (Student Academic Engagement), the Engineering Faculty's Vice Dean for Education, the Centre for Engineering Education's research staff, as well as the Integrated Engineering Programme's (IEP) module leads, teaching staff and Director of Studies. The IEP includes the modules 'Engineering Challenges', 'Design & Professional Skills' and 'Mathematical Modelling & Analysis I&II' and the visitors got to observe IEP's 'Scenarios week' (project based activity).

The groups also had time for a tour of the UCL Bloomsbury campus, UCL's MechSpace in King's Cross, UCL East's Urban Room, TEDI London in Surrey Quays, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the University of Southampton!

The Innovative Engineering Curriculum Project was born out of conversations with Professor John Mitchell and engineering teaching staff based in South Africa, and it was great to hear from key staff on this project how far it had come and its vision for the future, and we look forward to further inter-institutional collaboration from all the new connections formed across the week.
