"Theories of deficit and practices of intervention: can an understanding of mechanism bridge the gap"
Abstract: In this talk, Professor Thomas discusses why there is a gap between theories of deficit and practices of intervention with respect to developmental disorders. Professor Thomas considers how research using neurocomputational models of developmental deficits may help bridge this gap. Such models indicate that where cognitive development proceeds atypicality due to neurocomputational limitations in the relevant underlying mechanisms, behavioural interventions are unlikely to be successful in fully remediating deficits. However, a number of exceptions exist to this general rule, and these point the way towards avenues of optimal intervention.
All welcome to attend.
