Course structure

This intensive four-week course provides a theoretical framework for translators and researchers in the area of AVT as well as hands-on training with audiovisual material taken from different authentic contexts.

The course is divided in three modules:

Module A: Subtitling (29 June - 7 July)

12 hours of language specific teaching 

Module B: Dubbing and Voice-over (8 - 16 July)

12 hours of language specific teaching

Module C: Accessibility to the Media (17 - 24 July)

12 hours of teaching in English (no language specific sessions)



All tutors are established trainers and professionals with close links to the industry and an encompassing knowledge of AVT.

Mr Andrés García will be teaching Module A (Subtitling) and Module B (Dubbing and Voice-over) from English into Spanish. He holds a BA in English Language and Linguistics from Roehampton Univeristy and an MPhil in Literary Translation from Trinity College Dublin. He has worked as a subtitler over the last ten years and also has experience in film editing as well as translating scripts, children's literature and theatre surtitles.

Ms Renata Mliczak  will be teaching Module A (Subtitling) from English into Polish. She is a subtitler and researcher in Audiovisual Translation and she works as a Teaching Fellow at University College London. She is a member of European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST) and the Audiovisual Translation Lab (AVT Lab), a research group working on media accessibility.

Dr Josélia Neves will be teaching Audio Description for the Blind and Partially-Sighted, component of Module C (Accessibility to the Media). as a PhD in Translation Studies from Imperial College London. She is Associate Professor at the Translation and Interpreting Institute, Hamad bin Khalifa Univeristy, in Qatar, a position she has taken on after her being coordinating professor at the Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (IPLeiria),in Portugal. She is the Leader of IACT – Inclusion and Accessibility in Action Research Group, at the IPL, and of TransMedia Portugal.

Dr Cécile Renaud will be teaching Module A (Subtitling) from English into French. She holds an MPhil in Film and Televison Studies from University of Glasgow and a PhD in Film studies from University of Southampton. She is a Teaching Fellow at University College London.

Ms Fabiana Ribero will be teaching Module A (Subtitling) and Module B (Dubbing and Voice-over) from English into Italian. She is senior translator in Audiovisual Translation, founder and director of Text since 1986, operation supervisor and trainer of junior translators and tutor for Audiovisual Translation at ISIT - Fondazione Scuole Civiche Milano (Master in Audiovisual Translation).

Dr Soledad Zárate will be teaching Subtitling for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing, component of Module C (Accessibility to the Media). She has a PhD in Translation Studies from University College London, with a dissertation on Subtitling for Deaf Children. She teaches Audiovisual Translation and Media Accessibility at UCL.


UCL has a very well equipped multimedia Translation Lab with state-of-the-art facilities. You will work with audiovisual digital material and will have unlimited access to computers, video and DVD viewing facilities, translation software, and professional subtitling workstations to allow you to work independently on your projects.

Entry Requirements

All courses are targeted at native speakers. You must either be a professional translator or have already received some training in translation. Please note that there is no entry test and you’ll be accepted on the merits of your CV.

Certificate of Completion

At the end of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion, provided that attendance has been satisfactory and you have completed your course projects.

Tuition Fees

The course fee is £650 for the three modules (A, B and C).

Fee for individual modules is £230.

The application deadline is 8th May 2015.  Note that although the course is selective, places may be filled before the deadline for applications. Course confirmation will be emailed to you within three weeks from receipt of application.

All payments must be made by debit or credit card. Please read applicable Terms and Conditions.


A minimum of 4 participants per language is required to run a module.

Spaces in each module are limited to 15 participants.
