Aniridia is an eye condition caused by an abnormality of the gene that controls eye development. Patients with aniridia have significantly reduced vision from birth. The most severe problem that threatens the precious sight of these children is when the external skin of the eye begins to break down and ulcerate. As a result, the front clear window of the eye becomes cloudy and these children and young adults suffer severe discomfort, pain and near total blindness.

The ‘Shine the Light on Aniridia’ campaign, or ‘Project Fairy Queen’ as it is affectionately known was established specifically to support Prof Daniels’ research into aniridia.
