This privacy notice tells you what to expect when MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing at UCL (LHA) collect information from you because you have applied or are applying for data sharing. LHA runs the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD), Southall and Brent Revisited (SABRE) and LINKAGE-Camden. Unless otherwise stated, the information in this notice applies to all three studies.
LHA is part of the University College London (UCL). UCL determines the ways in which any information which can personally identify you (your personal data) is held and used (UCL are the Data Controller).
How we collect data
LHA collects personal data about data sharing applicants through:
- phoning or emailing
- joining wiki / skylark / swift via the website
- returning completed data applications and confidentiality forms
It also applies to the way we handle, process and store your information in:
- sending mail and email
- storing completed data application and confidentiality forms
- providing a lay summary of the project on the website
- providing metrics for external publication
Why do we collect data?
We collect the data in order to offer data sharing services and to carry out administrative work. From time-to-time we may email you to let you know about updates to our data sharing process.
If we do want to collect personally identifiable information, we will make it clear why we need to collect personal information and will explain what we intend to do with it.
Processing and consent
When we ask for personal data we will outline how we will use and manage it. We will not use this personal data for other purposes without asking your permission. We will not keep this information for longer than necessary. We will not use third parties to process your data and we will never sell your data to third parties.
Data location and security
We take data security very seriously and adhere fully to MRC and UCL data security policy and procedures. UCL is the Data Controller, and is responsible for ensuring that all data are securely stored, handled and used in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. UCL’s data policies and procedures for storing and handling NSHD data have been approved by the NHS Information Governance Framework and are equivalent to MRC policies and procedures.
Electronic is held on UCL secure servers. Data in paper form is held within secure filing cabinet and destroyed securely.
