Managing medicines

This work package seeks opportunities to use medicines more efficiently, to treat more than one condition and to find new uses for drugs by making use of prescribing data.

In patients with multiple conditions, the treatment of one disease can worsen another, posing a dilemma. We will identify how frequently this 'competition' between diseases arises and what to do when it does. We address this by taking a computational approach to prescribing data in Linked Electronic Health Records (EHRs) allowing us to quantify prescribing patterns, analyse the effects of polypharmacy, and investigate any effects of physician preference for particular drug classes or combination of drug classes on outcomes.
