BHF Centre of Excellence

Heart disease remains one of the biggest killers worldwide and the BHF Centre of Research Excellence at UCL is dedicated to reducing cardiovascular disease 'from cell to society'

In spite of considerable advances in diagnosis and management, we know that cardiovascular disease remains a major burden to global populations. We also recognise that the challenge presented by cardiovascular disease  has evolved with an ageing population and a greater appreciation of the impact of ethnicity, sex and the socioeconomic dimensions of health.

Since its foundation in 1826, UCL has been at the forefront of advances in the understanding of the cardiovascular (CV) system in health and disease and has aspired to apply new knowledge for the benefit of all. The award of a BHF CRE application builds upon this legacy by enabling multidisciplinary workforce development, embedded collaborations with engineering and data science, and established rich platforms for genomic, imaging and socioeconomic research across the life course.

Our CRE is based on four themes that align with UCL’s mission to reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease (CVD) through prevention and treatment, teaching and training, policy development and advocacy with and for patients. All 4 of our themes and the connections between them will deliver the BHF’s goals of better outcomes, development of new and more effective treatments, and promotion of healthy ageing. Together with the BHF we will tackle cardiovascular disease from infancy to old age, enhance knowledge of genetic contributions to disease and resolve health inequalities.
