Adult Pulmonary Hypertension

Overview: The Royal Free Hospital is host to one of the eight National Referral Centres for pulmonary hypertension and has established an international reputation in the subspecialty field of Connective Tissue Disease associated pulmonary hypertension. The close links with the Academic Department of Rheumatology is recognized in the governance structure of the service. The department manages over 1000 patients with pulmonary hypertension either at the centre or via its pioneering outreach service delivered at outreach centres (Bath, Belfast, London (St Thomas’ and Kings), Portsmouth and Plymouth).

Dr JG Coghlan is the clinical and research lead for the department supported by Dr B Schreiber and a specialist research team (R Ochiel, R Stanton). The unit has a significant publication record and an active research program. The bulk of the work is industry funded, however investigator led research either unfunded or through funding bodies such as the British Heart Foundation, Arthritis & Rheumatism Society, the Scleroderma Society and the National Pulmonary Hypertension Physicians Association.
