Editor - Ruth Lovering
The Cardiovascular Gene Ontology (GO) Annotation Initiative was launched on the 1st November 2007 as a collaboration between University College London and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), funded by the British Heart Foundation.
The Coordinator for the project is Dr Ruth Lovering, and she will be joined in May 2008 by Dr Varsha Khodiyar, an experienced GO annotation curator. Daniel Barrell, from the GOA group, EBI, is providing bioinformatics support for the project.
Gene Annotation
Consultation with the International Scientific Advisory Panel resulted in a list of 250 genes being identified as the priority targets for annotation, from a list of over 4,000 genes associated with cardiovascular processes. This priority list and the gene targets for each month are available here. To date, this initiative has associated almost 1,500 GO terms to over 200 proteins, of which 894 are to 140 human proteins. 46 prioritised genes have been comprehensively annotated using GO terms, including ABCA1, ABCG1, ANGPTL3, APOA1, CDH13, CDK6, CDKN2A, CDKN2AIP, CELSR2, CETP, CIDEA, CLPTM1, FMN2, GAA, GPX1, MIA3, MTHFD1L, MYBPC3, MYL1, MYLK2, PCSK2, PSRC1, SELS and SMAD3.
In addition, a gene association file containing all available GO annotations for the full list of 4000 genes identified as being implicated in cardiovascular processes, is now released monthly and can be downloaded.
Gene Ontology
Over 30 cardiovascular issues have been raised with the Gene Ontology Editorial team since the start of the project. These issues cover a variety of subjects, including developing the ontology to describe plasma lipoprotein particles, lipoprotein mediated signalling and regulation of phospholipase activity.
Call for contributions from the cardiovascular community
We have provided a variety of tools to enable cardiovascular scientists to review the annotation of their "favourite" gene and suggest what information is missing or incomplete or inaccurate in these annotations. GO annotations can be viewed at the editable wiki site. Once registered as a user, it is possible suggest GO annotations or papers to be used for annotation, directly on these wiki pages. Alternatively annotation suggestions can be sent by email or through the GO user survey form.
