ICS Director: Professor Perry Elliott

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. We pursue a multidisciplinary approach to elucidating the causes and treatment of cardiovascular disease and training the next generation of cardiovascular researchers is a high priority for us.

We bring together basic and clinical scientists from UCL and expert clinicians from UCL partner hospitals to provide:

  • Innovative research for the prevention and treatment of diseases of the heart and circulation
  • World-class teaching and training in the Cardiovascular Sciences
  • Forward-thinking policy development for effective Cardiovascular disease management

Our research is broad, spanning discovery-based laboratory science, clinical translation and experimental medicine, as well as healthcare evaluation, implementation and policy. Much of the work is interdisciplinary, integrating with UCL Engineering, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Behavioural Science, Ophthalmology and the UCL Genetics Institute. We have a flourishing link with leading cardiovascular scientists and clinicians at Yale University through the Yale UCL Collaborative.

We run a successful MSc in Cardiovascular Science and offer an iBSc in Cardiovascular Science for UCL medical students. Our research students are involved on a wide range of PhD and MD(Res) programmes, as well as in the four-year British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Biomedicine PhD. There is detailed information about all of these courses as well as our short courses on our study pages.

ICS is one of seven institutes within the Faculty of Population Health Sciences which is part of the School of Life and Medical Sciences.

The Faculty intranet has a wealth of useful information for staff about HR, research & funding services, enterprise and professional networks and much more. Staff are strongly encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Faculty intranet and to use it to look for information.
