ACED Innovation Workshop: Exploiting the immune system for the early detection of cancer

It is well known that the immune system detects cancer directly and protects normal tissue injury from malignant invasion. What is not known is how early this detection takes place. What if we could identify the earliest changes in the immune system in response to cancer? What if the immune system is the key to detecting cancer earlier than currently possible?

ACED has the platform and expertise to explore this! The answers to these questions require a truly collaborative effort, with researchers willing to think outside the box. The aim is to explore innovative approaches that draw on expertise from across fields including: cancer biologists, immunologists, data scientists, molecular imaging, and engineers. We want to create the building blocks for a multi-disciplinary, pan-ACED multi-million pound/dollar research programme that outlines how the immune system can feasibly be exploited for cancer early detection.

Think big data sets, biomarkers, the innate vs. the adaptive immune system, inflammation and cancer...! And what technology and model systems are needed to validate these approaches?

This is your opportunity to be part of a major new strategic programme of ACED research.  As a first step we will hold a “sandpit”-style innovation workshop to draw together a diverse and multi-disciplinary group of researchers from across ACED to bring together their expertise, resources and technologies and to brainstorm innovative concepts to address this challenge.

See here for more information on the theme, the nature of the workshop, and the registration process.

You will need to have registered for the ACED online community platform to access the information and to apply for the workshop. Please complete the online form to join the ACED platform if you do not have access.

The deadline for applications to attend the workshop is 5pm Monday 25th October.
