Application to the CRUK City of London Clinical Research Training Fellowships (CRTFs) must be submitted through the Crick's online academic recruitment system.
Before beginning an application, you should read the information on this page before completing the CRTF application form. You should also find out about the projects being offered to start in September 2019 and their supervisors.
You must complete all required sections of the application form in full.
Key dates
- Application deadline – 12:00 noon Tuesday 19 March 2019. Late applications will not be accepted.
- Referee deadline – Tuesday 26 March 2019. Your application may still be considered if references are not received by this deadline. However, no applicant will be invited to interview unless references have been received.
- Invitations to interview – by Thursday 25 April 2019.
Interviews
Interviews will take place at the Crick on Wednesday 8 May 2019, when candidates should be available all day. Some candidates may also be asked to attend on Tuesday 7 May 2019. We will pay for hotel accommodation (if needed) and reasonable travel expenses, including for international candidates. If you will be travelling from outside the European Economic Area, we will book air travel to keep the candidate costs down.
During the interview day, candidates will find out more about the PhD programme, will be interviewed by a panel of CRUK CoL faculty, and have the opportunity to meet the relevant supervision teams. Fellowships will be awarded to the best applicants based on information submitted on the application form, references and performance during the interviews.
Completing the CRTF application form
Please read the following candidate instructions carefully before starting or submitting your application.
Register through the Crick's online academic recruitment system
- You must register on the Crick’s academic recruitment system and activate your account before you can complete an application form.
- To register, you will be asked to provide a valid email address - please type this in carefully as the account activation link will be sent to this email address. Please note that these emails sometimes get blocked by email/university security systems or end up in spam folders, so check your spam/junk folder.
Please make sure that your email address is one that you will check regularly throughout the application process as this will be how we will contact you.
Complete the application form
- The online application form has 12 sections: personal details, project choice, education, professional qualifications, clinical employment, research experience, statement, other details, references, equal opportunities, declaration, and ask a question/message.
- You can move from section to section by clicking on the left-hand links. You can save your progress so you can return to and complete the form at a later date. However, if you move to a new section of the form without completing all the required fields and hitting the 'save' button, changes will be lost.
- The deadline for applications to the 2019 CRUK CoL CRTF training programme is 12:00 noon (GMT) on Tuesday 19 March 2019, when the online application site will close. However, you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible, to allow sufficient time for your referees to supply their references.
Please note that the deadline for references is Tuesday 26 March 2019.
How to complete the application form
Please read the following information before you complete the CRTF application form.
- Personal details
Fill in your name in the correct format, capitalising the appropriate letters (e.g. Joe Bloggs instead of joe bloggs), as this will be used in all future correspondence with yourself and your named referees.
- Project choice
This is a competitive programme with up to three fellowships available. The fellowships will be awarded to the best applicants based on information submitted on the application form, references and interview performance.
When you complete the application form you will be asked to select up to three CRTF PhD projects in ranked order, with 1 being your most preferred choice. Before completing the application form, please read about the available CRTF PhD projects carefully.
You do not need to contact supervisors to discuss the project(s) or your application before submission, but you are welcome to do so if you wish.
- Education
Please provide details of your academic education including degree grades. Your first entry "Academic Degree 1" should be your medical or dental degree.
If you are studying/have studied at a non-UK university, please give your university's standard name in English.
In the section on your courses/modules taken, please state each course/module with credits and marks/grades in order to give us as complete information as possible. Please enter each course/module as a new paragraph. If you have studied at a non-UK university, please detail your grades and provide information about your university’s grading system.
Note: you can re-size the text boxes to make them larger by using the drag handle in the bottom right-hand corner of the text box (note that some browsers, e.g. Internet Explorer, have a scrollbar instead).
- Professional qualifications
Please provide details of your professional qualifications (if applicable) including the title (eg MRCP, FDS etc), result achieved, level and field of study, institution and dates.
- Clinical employment
Please provide details of your clinical employment history since qualification including the name of the hospital, clinical specialty, grade of training and dates.
- Research experience
Please provide details of your wet or dry laboratory experience, including details of the institution(s), supervisor(s), dates, brief description of the project(s) and research skills learned. Please do not include clinical audits or service evaluations.
- Statement
Please pay particular attention to this section and describe your clinical, research and career aspirations (max 300 words) and tell us the reason(s) why you have selected the particular projects (max 200 words).
]You will be asked to upload a copy of your CV - this must be a PDF (.pdf) file that is no larger than 2MB.
- Other details
This section is to provide additional information about yourself (such as details about your GMC or equivalent registration, eligibility to work in the UK, any additional information you wish to bring to our attention), and to help us advertise our fellowships in the future.
- References
We ask you to give details of two to three referees. Please select your referees carefully: one must be your current or most recent clinical supervisor, at least one must be able to comment on your wet/dry laboratory-based research experience, and at least one must be able to comment on your clinical education, skills and experience.
Please ensure that your referees' contact details, especially their email addresses, are accurate and enter only one email address per referee. We will not normally make any changes to referee details after you have submitted your application.
The deadline for reference receipt is Tuesday 26 March 2019. Your application may be considered if references are not received by the deadline, however, we will not invite any applicants to interview without 2 references in place. It is therefore important that you check - before you submit your application - that your referees will be able and willing to provide a reference within this timeframe.
We will contact your referees by email as soon as you submit your application, asking them to complete an online reference form. When you submit your application please contact your referees to confirm that they have received our reference request email (these emails sometimes get blocked by email/university security systems or end up in spam folders).
Please help your referees meet this deadline by informing them of your application, and encouraging them to submit their reference soon after receipt of our email. You and your referee will receive an acknowledgement email once each reference has been submitted.
Note: if you leave your application until the closing date your referees will only have a short time to return your reference.
- Equal opportunities
This section is for equal opportunities monitoring purposes and the information you provide will be anonymised and will not be available to recruiting supervisory teams.
- Declaration
Please review your application carefully and complete any missing fields. Once all the mandatory fields are completed, you will be able to submit by clicking the submit button at the bottom of the screen.
Once you have submitted your application you will not be able to make further changes. You will be sent an email confirming that you have submitted your application.
Please note that these emails sometimes get blocked by email/university security systems or end up in spam folders, so please check your spam/junk folder.
- Questions / messages
If you have any questions about completing the application form, which you cannot find an answer to on our webpages, you can submit a question to us using the “Ask a Question / Message” feature.
We will endeavour to respond within 2 working days. You will receive an email with our response, and be able to log into your application where the response will be recorded (click on the 'view' button next to your original message). You will be able to access this section of the form when your form is partially completed and after you have submitted it.
