New student centre set to transform UCL student life

3 October 2018

When it opens its doors the new student centre will forever change the UCL student experience and champion sustainability.

New Student Centre from Wilkins Terrace

Located in the heart of UCL's Bloomsbury campus, the new student centre will provide over 1000 new 'study seats' and break out places, making the project a focal point for university study and events.

The architect, James Eades, a UCL architecture alumnus, and his colleagues at Nicholas Hare have placed student experience at the heart of the building’s purpose, and by doing so will dramatically change student life at UCL.

The building is designed to encourage socialisation through informal and flexible spaces while also providing quiet places for study.

A new Japanese garden will feature one level up from the street flanked by wide, generous steps providing not only improved functional access to the Wilkins Terrace but also further informal meeting spaces for students and visitors alike.

But perhaps the most spectacular element of the new build will only be seen by those who take the time to ascend the building. On the top floor, students will arrive at a unique landscaped roof terrace providing yet another green space for students to relax in.

Another alumnus is also working closely on the project. Sophie Morris, who graduated from UCL in 2015 with a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering (MEng) has worked on the project as a Graduate Construction Manager with Mace Group.

Sophie said: “If UCL is going to be at the top of the rankings, we're going to need to have the facilities and space, as well as make sure that they are sustainable."

Throughout the building design, functionality is tied to sustainability and the plans are on track to receive an ‘outstanding’ rating from leading environmental assessors BREEAM, a significant achievement matched by only a handful of buildings in the UK.
