UCL's Connect series heads to Manchester
7 June 2018
Wednesday 6 June saw UCL’s Connect series head to Manchester; our first Connect event to be held in the city.
Our panel of alumni speakers shared insights into their fascinating careers. We were delighted to welcome Rana Khalaf (MSc Development Administration & Planning, 2009), an independent research consultant who has written several key publications on Syria, who talked about how important it was to stay in touch with UCL. Maurice Watkins CBE (LLM Law, 1965), one of the best known sports lawyers in the world and Senior Partner at Brabners LLP Manchester also sat on the panel and shared the importance of owning up to your mistakes but not letting them own you. He reminded UCL alumni that sharing your problems or mistakes and working together to find solutions was hugely beneficial.
Finally the audience heard from Steph McGovern (BSc Science Communication &Policy, 2005) the award winning broadcaster who has worked in financial journalism for 15 years and is perhaps best known as part of the BBC Breakfast team. Steph discussed the value of mentors and how students shouldn’t wait for a mentor to come to them – by taking risks and asking for help, it is possible to learn a lot from the people around you.
This was a fantastic evening and a unique opportunity for many of our alumni to learn, be inspired and connect with others from UCL.
Our next regional Connect event will be hosted in Edinburgh on the 19 June. All UCL alumni and their guests, UCL Staff and Students as well as those joining us in September are very welcome to attend.
