Volunteer stories: Dawei Shi

This Volunteers' Week we're shining the spotlight on nominees for our Alumni Volunteering Awards, including Dawei Shi who is nominated for supporting incoming Chinese students.

Starting university can be a daunting prospect, especially for international students who face the added challenge of moving to a new country, often for the first time in their lives.

Having made the move from China to London himself, Dawei Shi (MSc Drug Design, 2016) decided to create an online group where he could pass on his insights to new and prospective students from China. Through the popular group Dawei welcomes students and answers their questions, easing the transition from home to university life.

Dawei holds his time at UCL close to his heart, and says he was motivated to volunteer his time by a desire to help others have the same positive experience.

I really enjoyed being part of a university where people were willing to help each other […] For me, being an alumni volunteer is a way of sharing what I learned from UCL and to continue contributing to the wider community.”

Dawei wants to help students make the most of university life, and experience for themselves that UCL's academic brilliance is equalled by its outstanding campus culture.

Dawei's support has undoubtedly helped many students, but perhaps the best example was when a UCL offer holder picked UCL as their firm choice, and explained that it was Dawei’s kindness and excellent support that showed how inclusive UCL is - the perfect place to study.
