Footer
The footer is a consistent, site-wide closing element. It acts as a structural container for secondary navigation, essential legal information, copyright notices or other utility links.
The footer is available in two variants: Full footer and Slim footer. Choose the variant based on the amount of supporting navigation and the needs of the application.
Full footer
The Full footer contains three blocks of link lists. Use this footer when users would benefit from additional wayfinding, such as access to related services, support content, or institutional links. This component variant is most appropriate for content-rich or multi-level applications where the footer acts as a secondary navigation hub.
The UCL website uses only the full footer, and it is consistent across the website.
When to use it
- When users may reach the end of a page and still need navigation options.
- Group links into clear, meaningful categories to support information discovery.
- Avoid overloading with low-value links; prioritise frequently used destinations.
- Maintain consistent link labeling across the product website.
Slim footer
The Slim footer is a reduced version without link list blocks. Use this variant when additional navigation is unnecessary or would add visual noise to the interface.
Social links may be included in the Slim footer. These can be either the general UCL social channels, or application-specific social links (when available).
When to use it
- Prefer the Slim footer for task-focused tools and transactional experiences.
- Keep content minimal and utility-focused (for example: copyright, legal, essential social links).
