Whiteness and White Fragility Course
The Faculty of Brain Sciences are hosting 'Whiteness and White Fragility' courses, open to all.
Last year, the IoO pledged to confront difficult issues of structural inequality and systemic racism. Everyone is now invited to attend a training session on racialised implicit bias, which will focus on sociological aspects of how we think about race.
Often when we think about racism, we focus on victims of discriminatory bevhaviours by individual perpetrators. We overlook the ideological remnants of a historically racist system. We overlook the structural disadvantage of others, and, we certainly overlook any structural advantage we may have.
Using frameworks of both critical race theory and intersectionality, this session encourages us to think about our cultural racial ideology and consider our own structural advantage. Initially, terms such as 'white priviledge,' 'white fragility' and 'white complicity' may feel accusatory, and recognising where we may have unwittingy relied on our own inherited advantage and power may be uncomfortable. However, facing these truths about ourselves and our institutions is a necessary part of change.
Dr Dom Jackson-Cole (Equality, Diverstiy and Inclusion Training Specialist, SOAS) will be hosting 'Whiteness and White Fragility' sessions for the Faculty of Brain Sciences. In July 2020, the Faculty held a pilot session where 100% of attendees recommended the course. They said:
