Student Social Media Ambassadors Scheme

Are you passionate about creating content that engages audiences and brings the student experience to life? Get paid to create content as part of our Student Social Media Ambassadors

The UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences is looking for a team of four Student Social Media Ambassadors to help create engaging and accessible student-led content for our social media channels, primarily Instagram and YouTube. You'll be creating content aimed at prospective and current students and promoting Faculty events, showcasing your course and facilities, following trends and collaborating with others.

In this paid role you’ll take photos, capture and edit video, and write copy for social media posts. You’ll have the opportunity to be creative, bring your own ideas to the table and share content that you’re passionate about. You will meet regularly with fellow Social Media Ambassadors both within the Faculty of Brain Sciences and across related Faculties to work collaboratively and share ideas. You will report to the UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences Communications team.

What are we looking for in a Student Social Media Ambassador?

We’re looking for applicants who are confident using social media, speaking on camera, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. You should be organised, reliable and have excellent time management skills. We are looking for applicants who are motivated and excited to execute fun, fresh and creative content for our website and social media platforms. This role is flexible and is designed to fit in around your studies. The minimum commitment is one piece of content per term. The rate of pay is £13.95 per hour. There may be circumstances where we'll ask if you can work outside of normal working hours, for example attending an open day.

Overview of the role

The Faculty of Brain Sciences’ Student Social Media Ambassadors Scheme is a great opportunity for current students within the Faculty to get creative, collaborate with others and get paid to tell stories. We are recruiting four students for the scheme, from first-year undergraduates to PhD students on all our courses. So, if you are passionate about creating content that engages audiences and brings the student experience to life, we would love to hear from you.

This role is perfect for someone who is ideas-driven and loves the challenge of telling stories in creative and engaging ways. You will be trained by the Faculty Communications team to capture and edit engaging content to share across our social media channels, as well as guidance and support on content idea generation, planning and writing gripping captions. You will meet with the Faculty Communications team termly and will have the opportunity to collaborate with Social Media Ambassadors in different teams. By the end of the programme, you will have a portfolio of photo and video content that will have been seen by a wide audience. On completion of the Scheme, you can request a written reference for the Faculty Communications Team that you can use in future job applications.

Person specification

Essential

  • Excellent personal organisation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent written English. Reliable, responsible and able to follow set procedures and guidance
  • Able to work well in a team and share relevant information
  • Enthusiasm for the Faculty of Brain Sciences and keen to encourage people to apply for study here
  • Comfortable with talking to camera and being photographed
  • Basic photography and videography skills.

Desirable

  • Experience creating content for social media.
  • Already having an established social media presence, e.g. nano or micro-influencer

Duties and responsibilities

To be a Student Social Media Ambassador, you will be expected to:

  • Take part in our compulsory training workshop to be held mid-December 2024 or early January 2025
  • Take part in termly planning meetings with the Faculty Communications team
  • To commit to creating one piece of content per term
  • Adhere to content deadlines
  • Work alongside and communicate with other Brain Sciences Student Social Media Ambassadors and Ambassadors outside the Faculty
  • Follow and adhere to UCL’s brand guidelines
  • Follow and adhere to UCLs GDPR
  • Adhere to copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions when using images, music, or featuring people in your content.
  • Always respect confidentiality and privacy standards

Target audience of content

  • Current UCL Students: Cater content for both new and returning students
  • Prospective Students: Address those considering UCL and interested in student life in London.

Payment

As a Brain Sciences Student Social Media Ambassador, you will be paid as a causal worker. You will be paid £13.95 per hour of work completed. As a guide, it is estimated that attending a planning meeting will be 30 minutes’ pay, creating, editing and finalising a reel, including subtitles would be two hours’ pay. Payment is made one month in arrears on the last working day of the month and is administered by Unitemps. For every hour that you work, you will accrue £2.53 holiday pay. Details of how to claim payment will be given to you during the introductory session.

Working hours – expectations

Students on the Brain Sciences Student Social Media Ambassador Scheme are current UCL students employed on a zero-hour contract to create content. There is no minimum time commitment on the scheme, but you will be expected to pitch and produce at least one piece of content per term, attend training and get-togethers.
