Religion and belief equity

In the Faculty of Brain Sciences we pride ourselves on our long-standing commitment to religious equality and to supporting staff and students of all faiths.

Meet our Religion and Belief Equity Lead: Anouchka Sterling

Anouchka Sterling
At UCL, as at other higher education institutions in the UK, there are a growing number of staff and students from diverse faiths and belief backgrounds. While UCL was founded as a secular institution, a large proportion of its staff and students are people of religious faith or non-religious belief, and it is important that this is recognised in the way the university is governed, the manner in which it functions and in the shape of its success.

Religion and belief, even in their absence, underpin the very structure of the society we live in and the world we depend on. At a time when so much in the world around us is in flux, it is essential that we strive, as a community, to do what we can to ensure that this protected characteristic is indeed protected.

As Religion and Belief Equity Lead for the Faculty, I aim to discover, share and celebrate the diversity of religions and beliefs within our Faculty, to collaborate with EDI colleagues and others to serve UCL in this role and to shape an inclusive environment that contributes to the recruitment, wellbeing and progression of a diverse body of staff and students.

Developing Intercultural Competence and Practice

These workshops are an opportunity that will be useful to all staff and of particular interest to those who recognize intercultural differences in communication, either peer-to-peer or staff to student.
