Empowering Better End of Life Dementia Care (EMBED-Care Programme)

Programme Summary

EMBED-Care aims to develop new ways to improve end of life care for people dying with or from dementia and their carer. It is a five-year programme of work funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research. It is being run between the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department at UCL and the Cicely Saunders Institute at KCL.

One third of people aged over 65 will die with dementia, the commonest cause of death in the UK. Over time the number of people who die with dementia will increase. At present we do not know the best way to provide care for people with dementia in the last months and years of life and their families. EMBED-Care comprises of six integrated work streams to consider current and future needs for integrated palliative dementia care across the UK population. These will look at how people with dementia move through the health and social care system and develop new ways to deliver these vital services.
