Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for People with Mild Intellectual Disability and Mood Disorders
The CBT manual has been produced as part of a feasibility and pilot randomised controlled trial of CBT in people with mild to moderate learning disability and mood disorders
The manual walks you through each session step-by-step and offers practical tips—like how to communicate effectively—when working with someone who has a mild to moderate learning disability and experiences mood difficulties.
It includes worksheets and other helpful materials that can be used during sessions or at home. Because many people may find it challenging to complete homework or practice new skills on their own, we recommend involving a family member or paid carer to provide extra support.
The manual is designed for all mental health professionals, especially those working in IAPT services or GP practices, where adults with learning disabilities may be referred for therapy.
Some of the tools and techniques in the guide can also be adapted for other groups who may need extra help with communication and understanding during treatment.
Funded by the NIHR RfPB project PB-PG-O807-1412.
