We have an equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) committee comprising members from across our departments who represent all grades of staff within Division of Psychiatry, and provides an overarching structure to support the equity agenda and implement the DOP equity strategy.
These aims are supported by our Director of the Division’s annual Pledges, which put words to action.
EDI working groups
Gender Equity
The Division of Psychiatry Gender Equity Team aims to address the loss of women across the career pipeline and the lack of women in senior academic, professional and support roles, and improve working conditions for all in the division. Through our action plan and the contribution of our Gender Equity Team, we aim to reduce obstacles experienced by all staff and particularly women at major points of career development and progression and consider the intersection of gender with other factors.
The Division has demonstrated several key achievements since 2018:
- Increased proportion of women Professors, from 40% to 50%
- Increases in the promotion and retention of women academics – a 28% increase in the number of non-clinical women at Associate Professor
- Increased leadership positions occupied by women – the proportion of leadership positions held by women increased from 47% to 53%
- Four new leadership roles were awarded to early or mid-career women
- More women and men now discuss promotion during appraisals – an 18% increase since 2018
Race Equity & Ethnic Diversity
The REED working group oversees the development and implementation of a strategy to promote race equity, diversity and inclusion within the DoP which incorporates principles of the Race Equality Charter and a broader UCL agenda.
Since the development of the working group, REED has organised several events and resources for divisional staff and provided opportunity to share practical suggestions or solutions to the issue of increasing diversity here in the DoP.
LGBTQ+
The Division of Psychiatry’s LGBTQ+ working group is a supportive space for LGBTQ+ staff, students, and allies. The aims of the group are to:
- Create an inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ students and staff to work and study at the DoP
- Increase representation of LGBTQ+ mental health research within the DoP, including the Division’s MSc programs
- Promote visibility of LGBTQ+ research conducted in the DoP
- Facilitate and promote new research collaborations on LGBTQ+ mental health
- Identify and raise awareness of the experiences of LGBTQ+ staff and students within the DoP
Disability
The disability working group aims to improve the experiences of disabled staff in the division, through co-producing and delivering an action plan to enhance inclusion.
